The Spanish ship set sail on August 23 from the base in Ferrol. "Cristóbal Colón" is the main ship of the naval group of the NATO military-political bloc. The frigate performs tasks as part of Operation Noble Shield in the Mediterranean Sea.

NATO's permanent naval groups, which include two escort groups and two mine search groups, operate in the Mediterranean, Baltic Seas, and off the coast of Somalia.
