MIPT Creates a Self-Help Psychotherapist Bot

The bot will teach you how to manage emotions and combat fears

Elena Ivanova, a student at the Department of Technological Entrepreneurship at MIPT, has developed a chatbot called MindPlace, designed to manage emotions and combat fears. This project, which operates in Telegram, combines methods of evidence-based psychotherapy, providing users with access to self-help tools. Currently, the chatbot has already attracted about a thousand active users, many of whom came on the recommendation of their psychotherapists.

MindPlace provides the ability to keep a digital diary of emotions, use audio content for meditations, and take courses in basic psychological literacy. In the free version of the service, users can get information on how to help themselves with anxiety and panic attacks. A subscription provides access to video lectures and assignments from a psychotherapist aimed at developing attention and emotion management skills. The bot also includes a function to launch a Socratic dialogue — a technique that helps rationalize thoughts and reduce emotional stress.

According to Ivanova, the main target audience of the project is men and women aged 25 to 50 who strive to maintain emotional balance and avoid burnout. The MindPlace team plans to develop a mobile application with elements of artificial intelligence, which will expand the service's capabilities for psychological self-help.
