Deputy Gorelkin Announced New Requirements for Telegram

Telegram may introduce "verified source" badges as part of the new "law on deanonymization of channels," according to State Duma Deputy Anton Gorelkin. According to the new law, which comes into force on November 1, 2024, owners of social media pages and messengers with an audience of more than 10,000 users are required to provide information about themselves to Roskomnadzor. This also applies to owners of public channels in Telegram.

According to Gorelkin, Roskomnadzor plans to launch an application within Telegram to label channels after their registration. This will be part of fulfilling the requirements of the new law, which regulates user anonymity and control over public channels.

The deputy noted that, given the importance of the Russian market for Telegram, full compliance with the new requirements is expected. He added that it is not yet clear what the badges for verified sources will look like, but it is assumed that they will differ from existing verification systems, such as the blue checkmark. It is possible that Roskomnadzor will assign special labels to channels, displayed next to the channel name or in the profile.

Gorelkin also expressed the opinion that similar powers could be introduced in other countries if they adopt appropriate legislation.

Earlier, www1.ru reported that VKontakte and Telegram are the main fake platforms of the Russian Internet.
