Saves Thousands of Lives: Russia Develops "Minefield Manager" App for Military

It can be installed on any smartphone or tablet with Android OS and "Aurora" OS

"Minefield Manager" (MMP) is a product of NPO "Dvina." It is planned to be made a separate information module of the "Situational Awareness Enhancement Complex" (KPO-A), which was previously developed by "Dvina." KPO-A is needed to see own and enemy forces on the ground anywhere in the world. It has several degrees of internal information protection: from a combination of blocking to a "digital fence," in which data is destroyed when the smartphone or tablet carrier crosses certain coordinates on the map.

"Minefield Manager," in turn, will allow you to see the current mine situation on tablets or smartphones. According to Vladimir Orlov, General Director of NPO "Dvina," told "Izvestia," fighters on the front lines will be able to mark the discovered threat to life, whether it is a mine, a landmine, or another explosive device. Sappers or subsequent units will no longer be affected. The application will also be able to:

  • update data for all MMP users in real time;
  • use satellites and maps of the General Staff, detailed diagrams and terrain plans, including 3D models;
  • function when enemy electronic warfare systems are operating;
  • in the future, work not only in Russia and the CIS countries, but also in all hot spots on the planet. Military personnel with appropriate access will be able to see the mine situation anywhere in the world.

The integration of "Minefield Manager" into KPO-A will expand its capabilities. For example, through special KPO-A chats, neighboring units of the Russian military will be able to share information about landmarks near mined areas.

However, military experts note that developers should pay attention to additional encryption and protection of the application from hacking and the publication of possible disinformation in it when launching and refining the MMP. It is also necessary to consider limiting the access rights of employees of the Ministry of Emergency Situations and humanitarian demining missions, who will also use the MMP, in order to prevent data leaks.
