Tear the Propeller: Russia Develops 12/70 "Perekhvat" and 12/76 KS Shotgun Special Cartridges to Combat Drones

New Ammunition Will Increase the Effectiveness of Combating Small UAVs

The Izhevsk company "Tekhkrim" has developed special 12/70 "Perekhvat" and 12/76 KS cartridges for 12-gauge smoothbore shotguns to combat small unmanned aerial vehicles. This was reported to "Izvestia."

The "Perekhvat" cartridge is equipped with six lead segments, which are connected by a Kevlar thread. After the shot, the warhead of the cartridge breaks apart 15-20 m from the gun and forms a kill zone with a diameter of up to one meter.

The design of the cartridge is fundamentally known. It is based on linked buckshot, which is used for hunting animals. The buckshot is linked with fishing line or thread to increase the probability of hitting the target compared to a regular cartridge. The segments in the "Perekhvat" design are connected in such a way that we get a continuous kill zone, without "windows" between the striking elements, since the thread can also impede the movement of the drone.

The developers note that acceptable shooting accuracy is ensured at a distance of up to 50 m. However, the effectiveness of the cartridge at a longer distance depends on the skills of the shooter.

The 12/76 KS cartridge uses an Elei ring — a plastic cylinder that covers the shot projectile, which prevents the shot from scattering immediately after the muzzle and increases the accuracy of the shot. Each 12/76 KS is equipped with shot with a diameter of 3.5 mm and is effective at a distance of up to 75 m.

According to experts, this is the most effective shot for use against drones. If the shot is small, then a larger amount of it can be placed in the cartridge, but the small mass does not provide the necessary impact on the target. Heavier shot is capable of causing damage, but little of it fits into the cartridge.

Earlier www1.ru reported that Russia developed a system for protecting objects from drone attacks. The device includes detection stations, suppression stations, radar, and a camera.
