Russia's first self-driving tram has hit the streets of Moscow. The vehicle will run on tram route 10, without passengers, in test mode for the time being.
At the first stage, a driver will be in the cabin, and the system will repeat all of his actions. It will correct all of the person's decisions in the event of an error.
The tram is equipped with the most modern lidars. They will provide 360-degree visibility and obtain the most accurate data on the tram's location. If someone steps onto the tracks, the tram will stop in advance.
At first, the new transport will run on the streets of the capital without passengers. At the next stage, by the end of 2024, the tram will begin to fully manage the movement process in test mode, and the driver will insure his actions. At the third and final stage, by the end of 2025, we plan to launch a fully self-driving tram without a driver at the controls for passenger trips.
Specialists from the Moscow Metro created the software for the tram without the involvement of third-party companies. The self-driving technology is a unique development that belongs to the Moscow government.
Earlier, the vice president of the "National Automobile Union," Yan Haitseer, suggested that about a third of buses in Russia in 10-15 years will become self-driving.
