According to The Eurasian Times, the BrahMos missile is a modification of the Soviet-era Oniks anti-ship missiles. It was named after the Brahmaputra River and the Moscow River.

The test launch of the missile was carried out in June 2001 at the Chandipur test site. Later, missile production was established at enterprises in India and Russia.

Hindustan Aeronautics is modifying Su-30 aircraft for BrahMos missiles. The missile flies at a speed of over Mach 2.8, and its range is 450 km. Thanks to BrahMos, the Su-30 has become a "deadly complex" that delivers missiles over long distances, the publication concluded.
