Rosoboronexport has revealed detailed characteristics of the Tor-E2 SAM system, which is not only used by the Russian military, but also exported. It is a unique autonomous combat unit that, if necessary, can engage targets both as part of groups of Russian air defense systems and cooperate with air defense systems of foreign manufacturers. The development of the Almaz-Antey Aerospace Defense Concern is considered one of the best in the Tor SAM family.
The Tor-E2 is essentially a mobile air defense system. It is designed for round-the-clock destruction of aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, anti-radar and other guided missiles, gliding and guided aerial bombs, and drones. It is not afraid of fire and radio-optical-electronic countermeasures and extreme weather conditions. The complex can cover all types of units and formations during combat and on the march, as well as defend military and civilian facilities from attacks by various air attack weapons at ranges up to 15 kilometers and altitudes up to 12 kilometers.
The combat vehicle of the complex is an autonomous combat unit on a tracked chassis with high cross-country ability. It identifies aerial targets and provides guidance for surface-to-air guided missiles. The guidance station with an electronic-optical sight, television and thermal imaging channel simultaneously tracks and issues control commands to four surface-to-air guided missiles aimed at targets. Circular target coverage is provided at a range of up to 32 kilometers.
The Tor-E2 is equipped with a ground-based aviation interrogator. When detecting targets, the interrogator helps determine the state affiliation of objects: it indicates whose missile, aircraft, or drone poses a threat. After determining the target and its citizenship, the complex is quickly brought into combat readiness.
The Tor-E2's ammunition load is 16 surface-to-air guided missiles, which are located in special transport and launch containers to avoid damage. They reach speeds of up to one kilometer per second. The complex can engage one target with one or two missiles, or four targets simultaneously, that is, one missile per target.
At the end of February, it became known that the entire Tor family, including the Tor-E2, will receive a deep modernization. According to the head of the enterprise, Fanil Ziyatdinov, engineers will significantly increase its combat capabilities.
