"Doomsday Machine": Highly Protected "Ladoga" on the Chassis of a "Flying" T-80 Tank Spotted with Russian Military

The highly protected vehicle was developed to transport top officials in the event of a nuclear threat

The highly protected vehicle (HPV) "Ladoga" on the chassis of the "flying" T-80 tank produced by "Spetsmash" was spotted with Russian military personnel. Developed in the eighties, the armored vehicle was created to transport the country's top leadership during emergencies.

Support System Like Cosmonauts

The HPV was intended to protect officials from radiation and high levels of chemical, poisonous substances in the air, and nuclear threats. Therefore, "Ladoga" was nicknamed the "Doomsday Machine" and "Tank-Limousine." The second name is associated with the dimensions and level of comfort in the HPV.

The hermetically sealed HPV cabin contains:

  • comfortable seats
  • individual lighting
  • air conditioning
  • life support system
  • communication equipment
  • observation devices and instruments for measuring environmental parameters

An analogue of such a life support system exists only in cosmonautics

Engine — Just a "Beast"

The power plant of the "Ladoga" HPV is represented by a GTD-1250 gas turbine engine with a power of 1250 hp. It runs on any type of fuel. The armored vehicle develops a maximum speed on the highway of up to 75 km/h. The range with the use of main tanks is enough for 330 km.

The HPV is also equipped with a 18 kW gas turbine power unit, which provides electricity to all "Ladoga" systems during parking.

In total, "Spetsmash" assembled 5 units of the "Ladoga" HPV. Some participated in the liquidation of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. In addition, the armored vehicle was tested in the Kara-Kum desert, the Kopet-Dag and Tien Shan mountains, and in the Far North.

Currently, the "Ladoga" HPV is at the disposal of the FSO and the Ministry of Defense.
