What Happened to “Losharik”

The AS-31 submarine is called “Losharik” because of the unusual shape of its internal hull, which consists of interconnected titanium spheres. In July 2019, a fire occurred on the submarine, resulting in the death of 14 sailors. The reactor was not damaged during the incident.

In November 2019, the submarine was transported to the Zvezdochka Ship Repair Center, where specialists unloaded nuclear fuel from the reactor core. By March 2024, the repair work was almost completed. In June, “Losharik” will go for trials.
