Scientists from PNRPU Talked About How Car Jammers Interfere with Satellite Positioning

Satellite positioning technology is actively used in various fields: from navigation and agriculture to military affairs and geodesy. When using it, it is important to ensure a good signal between satellites and signal receivers. Distortions often occur on federal highways. This is due to the use of so-called car jammers. Scientists from Perm National Research Polytechnic University (PNRPU) decided to determine how the work of surveyors near highways affects signal distortion.

Specialists installed five geodetic points, for which they determined the coordinates. One of the points was a reference point, from which the location of the rest was calculated. The study took into account the distance of all points from the reference point, the absence of obstacles for the signal from the satellite to the receiver, as well as the proximity of the reference point to the federal highway.

Measurements were carried out using two-frequency satellite equipment. Scientists determined how many times the signal was lost. Specialized software was used to calculate the results.

At the point located near the federal highway and the possible influence of jammers, a large number of disruptions are observed, while there are none at other points.

In just 8 sessions, 547 cases of signal loss were recorded as a result of 72 impacts on signal reception. A high-quality signal is extremely important for the work of surveyors, because in the event of interference, the time of their field work increases.

Permian scientists recommend that surveyors work not far from highways when fewer trucks move along them. The fact is that jammers are used by long-distance drivers who are trying to hide the location of the truck from third parties.
