Vagner reported a major leak of Russians' personal data

More than half a billion records of Russians have leaked into the Web since the beginning of 2024

Roskomnadzor is investigating the largest leak of Russian data this year.

According to the "TASS" news agency, citing the Deputy Head of the RKN, Milosh Vagner, 510 million such records have been found on the Web since the beginning of 2024 - and almost all of them were published as a result of one leak.

In total, 510 million [records] were leaked, of which 500 [million] is one leak. We are investigating it now.

Vagner noted that fewer cases of leaks have been recorded, but they have become more global - "this one case covered almost the entire previous year." The source of the leak is not specified.

Earlier it became known that cybercriminals did not rest during the New Year's all-Russian holidays. From January 1 to January 9, 2024, they leaked 5 TB of Russians' personal data into open online access. This includes 324 thousand email addresses and 274.9 thousand phone numbers, and other data. It is possible that the RKN is dealing with this incident.

Some information security experts noted a potential boom in hacker attacks on Russia in the first quarter of 2024 and their growth to 15%. The weak link was predicted to be companies that officially purchase Russian software to comply with legislation, but in practice use familiar foreign software.

It is known that in 2022, after the start of the SVO, 600 million records about Russians were leaked into the network - more than 140 data leaks were recorded. And in 2023, Roskomnadzor recorded 168 personal data leaks - 300 million records about Russians were published.
