Russian company Lobaev Arms has begun testing a new sniper cartridge that could potentially reach speeds of over 1500 meters per second. This was reported to RIA Novosti by the head of the developing company, Vladislav Lobaev.
According to Lobaev, the cartridge is still in the "conditionally hypersonic" stage, as its speed is only on the verge of hypersonic. He emphasized that the final decision on the cartridge's category will be made after the completion of testing and determination of the characteristics of the serial product.
"Hypersonic starts at speeds above 1500 meters per second (above five times the speed of sound), a high-speed sniper cartridge is considered a cartridge flying at a speed of 900 meters per second," the gunsmith noted.
Previously, the hypersonic cartridge project was suspended due to the need to increase the serial production of existing weapons under a state order. However, the resumed work is related to the active use of new 10x100 caliber cartridges by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Such cartridges pose a serious threat, as they are capable of penetrating personal protective equipment at long distances, even without the use of armor-piercing bullets.
Earlier, the manufacturer reported on the release of a sniper rifle for beginners.
