The newest 120-millimeter self-propelled artillery gun 2S40 "Phlox" has been put on trials in Russia. It is a direct successor to the unique self-propelled gun "Nona" and a further development of the "Vienna" and "Khosta" systems.
"Phlox" is the first Russian self-propelled gun mounted on the chassis of an armored wheeled truck with high cross-country ability (previously, the base for self-propelled guns was a tracked chassis). The Ural-4320 wheeled chassis significantly increases the maneuverability of the self-propelled gun, which will allow for quick changes of firing positions.
A feature of "Phlox" is the combined semi-automatic rifled gun, which provides for firing all types of mortar mines and shells. The gun can fire like a howitzer and mortar, and can also be used for direct fire - like a cannon. The position of the barrel is monitored by automation: after each shot, the aiming is automatically restored. The rate of fire of the gun is 10 rounds per minute, the firing range is up to 12 km. The self-propelled gun's ammunition consists of 80 rounds.
Another feature of "Phlox" is the presence of a laser irradiation detection and optical interference system, which protects against guided projectiles and missiles. A new type of smoke protection is also provided. For self-defense, "Phlox" is equipped with a remotely controlled module with a 12.7 mm "Kord" machine gun mounted on the roof of the vehicle.
The armored Ural-4320 (it is protected from being hit by 7.62 mm armor-piercing incendiary bullets) has a five-seater cabin, which houses the driver and the artillery crew - the gun commander and loaders.
