AvtoVAZ has announced the release dates for the updated Lada Niva Legend. The SUV will receive a new 1.8 engine, improved transmission, galvanized body elements, an airbag, and other technical changes. When will the new Lada Niva Legend be released?
The updated Lada Niva Legend is expected to go on sale in late August 2026. The classic three-door "Niva" received a new engine, improved chassis, galvanized body elements, an airbag, and dozens of technical changes, but AvtoVAZ promises to keep it in the same price segment.
Serial production of the modernized Lada Niva Legend is planned to begin on July 20 – on the 60th anniversary of AvtoVAZ. This became known following the company's technical seminar in Moscow.
The main change in the Lada Niva Legend is the 1.8 engine
The main change is the new engine. Instead of the previous 1.7-liter engine, the updated Lada Niva Legend will receive an 8-valve naturally aspirated 1.8 engine from the Lada Niva Travel.
Its power is 90 hp, and the torque has increased by 24 Nm. Depending on the operating mode, fuel consumption should decrease by 3–30%.
After the update, the model should not move into a more expensive class. A company representative stated that the car remains in its price category and will still be the most affordable new car in Russia with permanent all-wheel drive.
What has changed in the Lada Niva Legend transmission
To make the new engine more reliable and fully unleash its potential, AvtoVAZ has refined the transmission.
Changes affected the differential half-axle gears, differential satellites, rear axle half-shafts, and the fifth gear of the secondary shaft.
The Niva body received galvanized parts for the first time
The body has also been changed. To increase durability and protection against corrosion, AvtoVAZ has for the first time started using double-sided galvanized steel parts in the assembly of the "Niva".
The front panel, hood, roof, tailgate, and rear apron of the car are now made from it.
What new options appeared in the interior and technology
The interior and technology also feature more modern solutions. The updated three-door model received ventilated front brake discs, a new steering wheel with a front airbag from Lada Granta, a third support for the transfer case, a one-piece molded hood sound insulation, a modern heating and air conditioning system with a cabin filter, central locking, and a single key for doors and ignition.
How to externally distinguish the updated Lada Niva Legend
Externally, the model can be distinguished by the air intakes on the hood, which are needed to improve ventilation of the engine compartment, as well as by the original two-tone 16-inch wheels of a new design.
In total, the updated Lada Niva Legend features more than 100 new and more than 60 modernized parts and assemblies.
At the same time, AvtoVAZ has retained the classic recognizable design of the brand's oldest SUV.
