Russia brought the Sarma multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) to the World Defence Show defense exhibition in Saudi Arabia. The newest artillery system is "the reaction of the Russian defense industry to the realities of modern warfare", when "surgical precision" is needed to hit a target, said military analyst Igor Korotchenko.
According to the expert, the Russian development may be of interest to representatives of the countries of the Global South (states of Asia, Africa, Latin America). Korotchenko explained that the main requirements for rocket artillery are a light and mobile combat platform, rapid deployment, the ability to strike and change position. These requirements are implemented in the Sarma MLRS.
Characteristics of the Sarma rocket system:
- Deployment from traveling to combat position — 3 min.
- Time of volley of all rockets — 18 sec.
- Caliber — 300 mm
- Number of guides — 6
- Automated fire control system
- Ammunition — guided projectiles 9M543, 9M544, 9M549
"Sarma" is the most modern MLRS, more mobile and lighter than the "Tornado-S", but with the same combat effectiveness.
Korotchenko recalled that a batch of Sarma MLRS has already been sent to Russian troops. The artillery system is being tested in real combat conditions. Russia may conclude the first contracts for the supply of rocket systems this year or next year, he concluded.
