Russia is offering a modernized BMP-3 to countries in the Asia-Pacific region (APR) that already operate infantry fighting vehicles, Janes writes, citing a Rosoboronexport representative.
The modernized BMP-3 was first presented at the VIDEX-2024 international exhibition of weapons and military equipment in Hanoi, Vietnam. The basic version of the combat vehicle has undergone significant changes.
It received additional protection against FPV drones. A "visor" or "barbecue" is mounted on the turret — a lattice or mesh dome. In addition, an improved version of the UTD-32 diesel engine has been developed for the BMP-3.
In the Asia-Pacific region (APR), infantry fighting vehicles are operated by Indonesia and South Korea. Vietnam has a total fleet of several hundred BMP-1s and BMP-2s acquired in the late 1970s. Cambodia has BMP-1s in service.
According to Janes, the Indonesian Marine Corps has 54 BMP-3F (amphibious version of the BMP-3). They were purchased from Russia in two batches in 2008 and 2012. There are also 54 BT-3F tracked amphibious armored personnel carriers based on the basic BMP-3 in service. Since 1996, the South Korean army has been operating about 70 BMP-3s.
