Project 636.3 submarines, code-named "Varshavyanka," are rightly considered the quietest and most maneuverable in the world. The commander of the electromechanical combat unit of the submarine cruiser, Denis Bayrachny, explained that the secret lies in the special design of the engine.
According to him, in the surface position, sailors use the main electric motor in the fifth compartment of the submarine, and to achieve maximum silence, they use the economy mode engine.
We use an economy mode engine, which is controlled from the fifth compartment. Due to its lower power consumption and to save electricity, we use it in the submerged position.
Can Even Turn Around on the Spot
At the same time, the economy mode engine is located separately, in the sixth compartment. Thanks to two additional shaft lines, the submarine can even perform turning maneuvers on the spot.
There are also two additional shaft lines here, which allow submariners to work "in opposite directions." The boat can turn around on the spot, and we can freely moor to the pier without any accidents or impacts.
"Caliber" Carriers
The Project 636.3 diesel-electric submarine is designed to destroy enemy submarines, surface ships and vessels, patrol, guard communications in the near sea zone, and conduct reconnaissance.
The submarines have a length of 74 m, a maximum displacement of more than 3.9 thousand tons. The strong hull provides the submarine with a working depth of 240 m and a maximum depth of 300 m, a range of up to 7.5 thousand miles. The main armament of the submarines is the "Caliber-PL" missile system.
