New MC-21 Doesn't Need Fancy Winglets: Composite Wing Will Outperform Top Airbus and Boeing

The aerodynamic quality of the MC-21 is 5-6% better than the latest foreign counterparts

Aerodynamic wingtip devices – winglets – are present on most modern aircraft. This aerodynamic element reduces induced drag, increases flight range, and improves fuel efficiency.

However, the new domestic MC-21 aircraft, unlike the SJ-100, does not have such winglets. Its wing is made of carbon fiber, a much stiffer material.

The composite wing of the MC-21 with a high aspect ratio, formed by thin supercritical profiles, allows for an aerodynamic quality at cruising speeds that is 5-6% better than the latest foreign counterparts.

The maximum wing aspect ratio is found on the Canadian turboprop aircraft Bombardier Q200 – 13.8. The direct competitors of the MC-21, the latest models A320/321 and B737-800, have significantly worse indicators.

The updated version of the A330CEO can come close to the perfection of the MC-21 wing, with a wing aspect ratio of 11.07, while the wing area will increase from 361.6 m² to 370 m². However, this is a wide-body aircraft, while the MC-21 is a narrow-body aircraft.

Earlier www1.ru reported that the hope of Russian aviation, "Ansat," demonstrated the ability to land in dense urban areas.
