Aerodynamic wingtip devices – winglets – are present on most modern aircraft. This aerodynamic element reduces the induced drag of the wing, increases flight range, and improves the aircraft's fuel efficiency.
However, the new domestic MC-21 aircraft, unlike the SJ-100, does not have such winglets. Its wing is made of carbon fiber, a much stiffer material.
The MC-21's high-aspect-ratio composite wing, formed by thin supercritical profiles, allows for an aerodynamic quality that is 5-6% better than the latest foreign counterparts at cruising speeds.
The maximum wing aspect ratio is found on the Canadian Bombardier Q200 turboprop aircraft at 13.8. The MC-21's direct competitors, the latest A320/321 and B737-800 models, have significantly worse indicators.
The updated version of the A330CEO can come close to the perfection of the MC-21's wing, with a wing aspect ratio of 11.07, while the wing area will increase from 361.6 m² to 370 m². However, this is a wide-body aircraft, while the MC-21 is a narrow-body.
Earlier, www1.ru reported that the hope of Russian aviation, "Ansat," demonstrated the ability to land in dense urban areas.
