The Airborne Combat Vehicle Model 4 (BMD-4M) is not suitable for the needs of the Russian army, so Rosoboronexport is seeking to find foreign buyers for it. This is according to military expert Peter Suchiu in the article "The New Russian BMD-4M Airborne Combat Vehicle Received Unsatisfactory Reviews" for The National Interest.
In the USSR, they developed air-droppable armored vehicles. Instead of parachuting separately or delivering vehicles on gliders, the crew remained in the vehicles when they were dropped from a cargo plane!
After landing, the crew removes the parachute, checks the armored vehicles for damage, and proceeds to the location for combat missions. "On paper, this sounds quite effective," the expert noted.
The BMD-4M is built on the BMD-3 platform. The latest version of the combat vehicle features an improved engine and chassis, and is armed with the Bakhcha-U combat module.
Rosoboronexport is now actively promoting the capabilities of the BMD-4M to attract foreign buyers. These combat vehicles solve a problem that the Russian army has never faced. Dropping lightly armored vehicles behind enemy lines can't achieve much. Russia realized that it is producing weapons that are not suitable for its needs and wants to pass it on to someone else!
