Russian heavy equipment needs to be equipped with effective Arena-M active protection systems (APS). This was stated by military expert Evgeny Damantsev.
The analyst noted that Arena-M is designed to intercept anti-tank guided missiles approaching tanks at speeds up to 1000 m/s; an earlier model could intercept projectiles flying at speeds up to 700 m/s.
In addition to BGM-71F anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs) of the TOW-2A, Milan-2T, as well as Silugin-P and Skif complexes, the Arena-M complex's interceptors are capable of intercepting American guided missiles of the APKWS-II type of Vampire tactical missile systems, as well as Brimstone-2 multi-purpose tactical missiles, approaching along flat trajectories.
At the same time, the analyst noted that the issue of constructively expanding the elevation sector of the radar system's (RLS) airspace scanning for guiding Arena-M interceptors remains open.
In the standard modification, the Arena-M's beam elevation angle of no more than 20 degrees does not allow detecting and capturing approaching FGM-148E Javelin ATGMs for precise auto-tracking.
The Arena-M complex includes a multifunctional radar station with high noise immunity, which detects targets. For targeted destruction of projectiles, protective ammunition of narrow-directional action is used, possessing high speed and placed around the perimeter of the tank turret in special installation shafts.
