The Russian multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) Tornado-S surpasses the American HIMARS MLRS due to the characteristics of guided and unguided rockets from the 300-mm MLRS 9K58 Smerch ammunition. This was stated by military expert Evgeny Damantsev.
The analyst recalled that the Tornado-S will receive guided small-sized rockets 9M534 with the Tipchak reconnaissance unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). They are designed for conducting operational target reconnaissance for 20 minutes.
The range of the 9M534 missile's UAV "throw" reaches 90 km, while the reconnaissance depth can reach 120-140 km when using repeaters. As a result, the Tornado-S crew can quickly conduct additional reconnaissance of the area directly before launching the remaining 11 guided missiles 9M542/544 and 9M549.
The expert did not rule out that the warhead of the 9M534 and 549 missiles may be represented not by five Motive-3M self-targeting elements, but by similar individual guidance kamikaze UAVs with small-sized cumulative warheads, ensuring the defeat of enemy armored groups in the rear.
The tactical and technical potential of the Tornado-S MLRS already noticeably surpasses its main competitor — the American HIMARS MLRS.
M142 HIMARS is a highly mobile MLRS on a wheeled chassis, developed by the American company Lockheed Martin. More than 20 types of ammunition were created for the installation, the firing range of which, depending on the type, can be from 30-80 km in MLRS mode.
