Station noise will be muffled by sound: RAS creates an acoustic environment for passengers

The N. S. Solomenko Institute of Transport Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IPT RAS) is developing an interactive sound environment for railway stations, airports, and transfer zones. The system mitigates harsh transport noise and adapts to weather and time of day, according to the Russian Ministry of Education and Science.

Unlike background radio and regular broadcasts, the system creates a dynamic acoustic atmosphere. It changes with the rhythm of the transport hub, the level of natural light, and the weather outside. Expensive equipment is not needed: the algorithms work on readily available technology. The system does not block announcements, alerts, or emergency warnings.

People spend hours at railway stations and airports, and the roar of transport grates on nerves. A well-designed environment helps maintain emotional balance and better navigate the space. Ordinary sound accompaniment only informs; the new environment softens the waiting experience.

The institute plans to use the accumulated experience for acoustic modeling of transport systems, taking into account urban development, climate, and operating modes of facilities. If the technology goes into mass production, railway stations will cease to be the noisiest place in the city.
