Russia to ban direct P2P cryptocurrency transactions: Central Bank names date

From July 1, 2027, it will be impossible to buy and sell digital assets directly from other people without the involvement of intermediaries

Russians will be able to directly buy and sell cryptocurrency from each other only until July 1, 2027. After this date, familiar P2P transactions between individuals without the involvement of authorized intermediaries will cease to be a permitted method of exchange. This is stated in the clarifications of the Bank of Russia, published on the regulator's official website.

P2P transactions allow users to exchange cryptocurrency directly with each other. For example, one person transfers rubles to another and receives digital assets in return. This method is often used to buy and sell cryptocurrency without resorting to traditional financial institutions. However, from July 2027, such operations will have to comply with new requirements.

According to Federal Law No. 282-FZ, ordinary cryptocurrency transactions in Russia will need to be conducted through authorized market participants. These include licensed brokers and crypto exchanges included in a special register of the Central Bank. This does not mean a complete ban on the purchase and sale of digital assets - the procedure for conducting operations is changing.

The new rules became part of the reform of the Russian cryptocurrency market. The law came into force on September 1, 2026, and until July 2027, a transitional period is provided for bringing the activities of market participants into compliance with the requirements. After its completion, direct P2P transactions between individuals will not be included in the list of permitted operations.
