Colored arrows on the roads now help drivers navigate one of Moscow's interchanges. On General Dorokhov Avenue before the Moscow Ring Road, red markings have been applied for exiting to the southern part of the city and blue for moving north. The same colors have been duplicated on road signs so that motorists can understand in advance which lane leads where they need to go.
The new scheme is currently operating in experimental mode. It is being tested by Moscow's Traffic Management Center (TSODD) and the State Traffic Inspectorate on a section where 95 accidents occurred from June 2025 to June 2026. Most accidents were related to lane changes and maneuvering.
The problem arises when a driver realizes too late which exit they need. They have to change lanes sharply, and some motorists try to return to a missed turn by backing up. The TSODD expects that colored arrows will help drivers choose their direction in advance and avoid such situations.
The test will last at least a year
City authorities will study how the markings work in different seasons and weather conditions and will survey drivers. Based on the results of the experiment, a decision will be made whether to apply such arrows in other parts of Moscow.
There is another idea — in the future, to mark exits with the same colors in navigation applications. This option is currently being discussed with service developers.
Colored markings are already used in Russia
For example, yellow lines are used to separate opposing traffic flows, and blue lines indicate paid parking. GOST 52289 allows for the experimental use of markings not provided for by current standards.
On paid Avtodor highways, chevrons are also used to maintain distance and rumble strips, known as 'musical' markings. They are designed to help drivers stay on the road.
