Fraudsters have started distributing malicious APK files under the guise of an application for motorists. Users are promised bonus points for fuel, discounts, and a convenient search for gas stations, the Ministry of Internal Affairs reported.
For the attack, the attackers created a phishing website, the design of which imitates the resource of a large Russian oil and gas company. It offers to download a supposedly official application with a map of gas stations across the country and information about fuel availability.
To make the offer look more convincing, the page featured fake reviews from motorists who allegedly have already installed the program and are using the bonuses.
In reality, the user is offered to download an APK file from a third-party source. The Ministry of Internal Affairs warns that installing such applications from links in messengers and from unknown websites is dangerous — malicious software can get onto the smartphone under the guise of a useful program.
Law enforcement officials advise checking the application source and the permissions it requests, using antivirus protection, and timely updating the smartphone's operating system.
