Deputies of the Legislative Assembly of Irkutsk Oblast have adopted a law prohibiting the sale of gasoline and diesel fuel to minors. The corresponding initiative was proposed by the local prosecutor's office due to an increase in the number of road accidents involving individuals under 18 years of age.
The ban will come into effect on March 1, 2027. The law will be valid for 6 years. However, individuals who have reached the age of 16 are allowed to purchase fuel at gas stations when filling the vehicle's tank. From this age, with a valid license, it is permitted to drive M category mopeds and light motorcycles up to 125 CC of category A1.
The explanatory note to the regulatory legal act states that over the past 3 years in Irkutsk Oblast, minors have been involved in 837 road accidents. In these accidents, 40 people died, and another 930 sustained injuries of varying severity. Moreover, 161 accidents occurred due to the fault of children.
In addition, in the Siberian Federal District (SFD), “there has been an increase in cases of minors being involved in illegal activities related to arson of communication facilities and other property”. For these purposes, offenders also use flammable materials.
