The Indian Ministry of Defence has signed a contract worth 5.86 billion rupees with Accurate Industrial Controls Private Limited for the supply of auxiliary power units (APUs) for T-72 and T-90 tanks. The agreement was signed on September 21 in New Delhi in the presence of Minister of State for Defence, Rajesh Kumar Singh.
Unlike the main tank engine, the APU is designed to generate electricity for onboard systems. According to the Indian Ministry of Defence, the units will power the fire control system, firing circuits, gun stabilization system, and other auxiliary equipment. The department did not disclose the number of ordered units or their delivery times.
The contract was awarded to the Indian manufacturer Accurate Industrial Controls, which already lists APUs for T-72 and T-90 among its own defense solutions. The project is being implemented under the Make-II scheme, which provides for the development of military equipment and components by Indian industry, followed by a transition to production and supply.
Earlier, "Pervy Tekhnichesky" reported that India is considering switching to a 1350 hp engine instead of the 1000 hp unit on the T-90.
India has been increasing its own competencies in servicing and modernizing T-90S for several years. In May, the Indian Heavy Vehicles Factory built the 1000th T-90S under a Russian license.
