Russia has offered India to acquire three modernized Project 877 submarines for approximately $1 billion. This was reported by the Indian publication IDRW.
These are Kilo-class submarines, known in Russia as the Varshavyanka project. With a deal price of less than $1 billion, the cost of each submarine could be less than $350 million. Delivery, IDRW claims, will take about three to four years.
However, the timing and age of the submarines have become the main problem with the offer. The Indian Navy currently operates 6 Kilo-class submarines, but their number could drop to 3 in the next three to five years.
Instead, India is betting on its own Project-75I and Project-76 programs. The latter envisages the creation of a conventional submarine with a displacement of 2500–3000 tons by the mid-2030s, with maximum use of Indian technologies.
