Gazprom has launched a pilot data center at one of the fields of the Medvezhye deposit in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug: low-pressure gas will be used to generate electricity for computing equipment. The company is implementing the project with "Kripto Energy" with the support of the district government, the company announced.
Gazprom considers residual reserves from depleted fields with low reservoir pressure to be a profitable base for data centers: it is more rational to use such gas near the production site for energy-intensive data processing facilities than to transport it.
"Kripto Energy" will build a modular complex for computing equipment and a gas piston power plant, Gazprom will ensure gas supply, and the government of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug will help power facility owners receive state support.
The second type of projects involves transferring surplus power generation capacities at fields in Russian regions to data centers. One such project has already been implemented at the Bovanenkovo field.
