Electric Motor Removed from Wheel: KNITU-KAI Patented an Unusual Electric Scooter

Kazan National Research Technical University named after A.N. Tupolev – KAI received a patent for an electric scooter design that abandons the traditional hub motor. The axial electric motor is installed inside the load-bearing structure and transmits torque to the rear axle via a belt drive.

The main effect of this layout is not only related to the drive. The battery and controller are located inside the hollow frame directly under the deck, so the main heavy components are lower and closer to the center of the vehicle. According to the developers, this should improve load distribution between the axles and increase the scooter's stability.

The axial motor is connected to the rear axle by a belt, not a chain. This scheme should provide smoother torque transmission, reduce vibrations and noise, and not require constant lubrication of the drive.

The declared efficiency of the electric motor reaches 91%, which should reduce heat loss and positively affect the range.

The design also includes a full two-axis suspension. The front wheel is mounted on a telescopic fork with two shock absorbers, while the rear uses a hinged arm connected to the frame by two shock absorbers. The rear axle simultaneously carries the wheel, brake disc, and the driven element of the belt drive.

KNITU-KAI developers note that the combination of a low battery position, axial motor, belt drive, and front and rear suspension allows for simultaneous improvement of stability, handling, and ride smoothness. The design is intended for use in urban transport and can also be used for sports purposes.
