The Russian industry is rapidly expanding its fleet of Project 885M Yasen-M nuclear submarines. The acoustic stealth of these submarines is considered among the best in the world due to their low-noise reactor, but NATO does not share this view, Military Watch Magazine reported.
The alliance noted the rapid buildup of capabilities of submarines equipped with Zircon cruise missiles in the Kola Peninsula region.
They may be invisible underwater. But not to us. We see them, we are closely monitoring developments. We take these developments seriously.
In June 2026, another Project 885M Yasen-M submarine cruiser, the "Murmansk," was laid down at Sevmash in the Arkhangelsk region. The Navy will receive it no later than 2034.
Currently, four Yasen-M project submarines are in service: "Kazan," "Novosibirsk," "Krasnoyarsk," and "Arkhangelsk." All of them carry Kalibr, Oniks, and Zircon missiles.
The publication "Tekhnosfera Rossii" specified that an average Yasen-M project cruiser takes 8 years to build. This is faster than submarines of a similar class in the US or Britain, but slower than in China.
