Over 25 years, the Indian supersonic cruise missile BrahMos has undergone more changes and modernizations than the Russian P-800 Oniks. This conclusion was reached by the Indian publication IDRW.
BrahMos was created as part of Russian-Indian cooperation. Its design is related to the Oniks family, but over the past decades, both missiles have developed independently.
While BrahMos has many advantages over the P-800, it has an identical radar signature, low-altitude sea-skimming flight profile, and ramjet engine signature.
Kunde added that BrahMos itself needs another deep modernization. He recalled that Indian specialists had previously spoken about the possibility of intercepting the missile as air defense systems evolve.
It should be noted that Kunde is referring to the basic P-800 Oniks missile, although the modernized Oniks-M with index 3M55 is already entering service with the Russian Navy. Compared to the initial version, this missile flies up to 800 km versus 300 km.
