Roscosmos explained how the respiratory system of specialists on the International Space Station is monitored. As part of the "Forced Exhalation" experiment, a special sensor and a nose clip are used, and acoustic signals obtained during a strong exhalation allow specialists to assess lung function.
The sensor allows checking the ventilatory function of the lungs directly during a long space flight, when it is impossible to use full-fledged medical equipment.
During the procedure, it is placed on the neck in the trachea area, and the nose is closed with a special clip. Then the cosmonaut makes the strongest and fastest exhalation possible. The equipment records the sounds that occur, after which the obtained data is analyzed by specialists.
During the first month of being in orbit, each cosmonaut must undergo five such sessions. The results are compared with control indicators obtained before going into space and after returning to Earth.
Specialists can monitor how the respiratory system changes during a long flight on the ISS. At the same time, it is not required to constantly keep a doctor nearby or use bulky diagnostic equipment.
