The laying down of the sixth Project 677 Lada diesel-electric submarine took place at the Admiralty Shipyards in St. Petersburg, the USC press service reported. The ship, developed by Rubin Design Bureau, was named "Maloyaroslavets".
The series is being built according to a modernized design, refined after the operational experience of the lead submarine "St. Petersburg". The first updated ship "Kronstadt" was handed over to the fleet in 2024, and in 2025, "Velikiye Luki" joined the Navy. Currently, two more submarines, "Vologda" and "Yaroslavl", are under construction at the shipyard. Project 677 submarines are considered the most modern non-nuclear ships in Russia: they have low noise levels, a powerful sonar complex, and missile-torpedo weapons for striking sea and coastal targets.
Andrey Puchkov, CEO of USC, noted that the laying down of "Maloyaroslavets" was the result of joint work between the Navy leadership and the corporation. According to him, the shipyard expects further development: modernization of the production and energy complex, reconstruction of the Parade Embankment and crane facilities. In 2027, work will begin on updating the deep-water embankment and the machine-building workshop.
Project 677 submarines are named after Russian cities. Maloyaroslavets played a key role in the battles of the Patriotic War of 1812 and the Great Patriotic War. The historical coat of arms of the city, depicting a bear with a raised axe, symbolizes readiness for defense, which is consistent with the traditions of the Navy.
