Kazakhstan refused Russian turbines but bought 20% more electricity

The republic is still heavily dependent on energy from Russia

Kazakhstan expects to reduce electricity purchases from Russia starting in 2027. However, in the first half of the year, supplies of Russian electricity to the republic only increased.

Statistics from Inter RAO show that from January to June, Kazakhstan received 1.68 billion kWh of Russian electricity — 20.3% more than a year earlier. The country accounted for 53% of the group's total Russian exports.

At the same time, Russian electricity imports from Kazakhstan, on the contrary, decreased by 4.7% to 1.13 billion kWh. Kazakhstan provided 94% of Russia's total imports in the first half of the year.

In April, it became known that Kazakhstan refused Russian turbines and generators for the third power unit of GRES-2 and switched to Chinese suppliers.

In parallel, the republic announced plans to develop its own generation and gradually abandon Russian electricity from 2027.
