A new structural detail has been noticed on Russian Geran-2 attack UAVs in the nose section – a small superstructure above the fairing. According to experts, it may be related to the installation of additional electronic equipment.
The distinctive detail looks like a small cap or protrusion on the upper part of the fuselage directly behind the nose cone. Its purpose has not yet been officially disclosed, so it is too early to draw definitive conclusions about the equipment based on its appearance.
One of the considered versions is related to a satellite communication channel. In this case, an additional module can be used for data exchange and telemetry over long distances, not limited to direct radio visibility between the aircraft and the ground station.
Another option is the installation of equipment for a decentralized mesh network. Several drones in such a configuration can act as nodes of a single radio network and transmit data through each other.
If the new superstructure is indeed intended for communication equipment, it may indicate a further expansion of the Geran-2's capabilities beyond flying along a predetermined route. In the future, this channel can provide data exchange between drones and transmit commands to change the mission after launch.
