In Yekaterinburg, engineers received a patent for a muzzle diffuser for shotguns. The device is designed to increase the spread of shot and create a directed flow after a shot.
The design is intended for direct installation on the weapon's barrel. Its basis is a casing with a pyramidal bell inside, the apex of which is truncated. An annular mount for the barrel is provided at the inlet, and the device's position is fixed by seals and adjusting screws.
The authors propose using the geometry of the internal walls of the bell to change the nature of the shot's movement after exiting the barrel. In the usual case, the shot projectile begins to diverge in all directions after the muzzle. In the proposed design, the shape of the bell should create a wider flow in a specific sector.
The developers indicate that the device is intended for a 12-gauge shotgun. Moreover, the claimed design can be used not only in hunting and sporting weapons but also in special equipment.
According to the data provided in the patent, tests at a distance of 15 meters showed a 40% increase in the damage sector compared to a standard muzzle choke.
The authors attribute the result precisely to the formation of the shot flow by the internal surfaces of the bell. At the same time, the patent describes the device as a means of obtaining specified dispersion characteristics, and not just as a conventional nozzle for increasing shot spread.
