Aircraft engine blades with wooden core: Russian engineer found a way to lighten the turbine

New method reduces production costs and part weight

Russian inventor Anatoly Onishchenko received a patent for a method of manufacturing a gas turbine engine blade forging using wood. The development is intended for aviation and power engineering. The technology allows reducing the weight of parts while maintaining their heat resistance.

The method is based on volumetric stamping of a blank consisting of an outer shell and an inner core. The shell is made of a heat-resistant alloy, for example, titanium. The core is made of carbonized (charred) wood – boxwood, oak, or birch. This design reduces the overall weight of the blade.

Thanks to the combined structure, the blade can be used at temperatures above 500 °C. According to the author, this reduces production costs and lightens the design of gas turbine engines without losing operational characteristics. In the future, the technology may find application in civil and military aviation engines, as well as in ground-based gas pumping units.
