Residents of Moscow and the Moscow region heard a loud sound resembling an explosion on August 7. The source of the sound was, preliminarily, a Su-35 fighter jet flying at supersonic speed, according to the "360" TV channel.
When transitioning to supersonic speed, an aircraft creates a shock wave – a sharp pressure drop on the ground, which is perceived as a loud bang or explosion. This phenomenon is called a sonic boom.
Around 11:15 AM, the sound was simultaneously heard in several districts of the capital and the region: Konkovo, Solntsevo, on Vernadsky Avenue, in Kommunarka, as well as in the east, northeast, and northwest of Moscow. Users on social media reported a bang resembling an explosion, but without consequences.
There were no official comments from the Ministry of Defence. Loud sounds associated with military aviation flights are not uncommon for the Moscow region, although such incidents are usually rarely commented on officially. Previously, similar incidents were recorded in 2023 and 2025, when residents of the capital mistook a sonic boom for an explosion.
