Drones threaten energy: Russia begins building turnkey protected facilities

Rostec offers regions projects adapted even for the Arctic

The threat of drone attacks on energy infrastructure is forcing a review of approaches to facility construction: "RT-Proektnye Tekhnologii" (part of Rostec) and the Akron holding have begun offering Russian regions turnkey energy facility construction with integrated anti-drone protection systems. The infrastructure is adapted to challenging conditions – from the Arctic to seismic zones.

Builders operate on a "single window" basis: design, production, installation, commissioning, and service from one manufacturer. Their own production facilities manufacture transformer substations, switchgear, uninterruptible power supply systems, and energy storage devices.

As noted by "RT-Proektnye Tekhnologii", in the face of increased external threats, projects integrate UAV detection and suppression systems, as well as physical protection solutions. This allows for the creation of energy hubs ready for any challenges. Among the implemented projects are equipment supplies to a number of Russian regions and to foreign energy facilities in friendly countries, according to Rostec.

How energy facilities are protected from UAVs

To protect energy facilities from drones, comprehensive solutions are used, including both physical barriers and electronic warfare systems. Among the physical methods is the modular "Pautina" system, capable of withstanding a direct hit from a drone weighing up to 200 kg, flying at a speed of 250 km/h. The protection is a power grid on metal structures, which is mounted over the object with bolted connections without welding.

For electronic suppression, EW complexes are used, which create a "security dome" around the object, disabling drones by electromagnetic interference with control and navigation channels. Among such systems is the "SERP-VS13D" from the Roselektronika holding, operating on thirteen frequencies and capable of suppressing even FPV drones and quadcopters resistant to standard EW means. Portable "Kupol-PRO" systems are also used for local protection, and as part of an echeloned air defense for nuclear power plants, "Pantsir-S1" anti-aircraft missile and gun systems are used, combining missile and gun armament.
