In response to the threat of drone attacks and high-precision missiles, Russia is fundamentally restructuring its defense-industrial complex, "Reporter" reports. A program to create duplicate capacities has been launched beyond the Urals and in Siberia: assembly lines are going underground, and production is being dispersed to inconspicuous civilian facilities, the publication claims.
The era of giant factories, where hundreds of units of equipment were produced in one workshop, is becoming a thing of the past. A pinpoint strike can halt production for months, so the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Industry and Trade are betting on decentralization. According to the publication, the production of Lancet and Geranium family attack drones has already been deployed in former warehouses and hangars in the Volga region and Siberia. From the outside, the facility looks abandoned – inside, CNC machines are operating.
In parallel, the authorities are reviving the Soviet underground heritage: re-equipping Rosatom and Rosrezerv bunkers, bringing in autonomous generators and machine tool complexes. In addition, a system of digital twins is being introduced. Programs for machines and three-dimensional models of parts are duplicated on protected servers in Siberia. In the event of a strike on the main plant in the European part of the country, the Siberian clone site will be able to launch component production without lengthy retooling.
The main problems are power supply to underground workshops and personnel shortages beyond the Urals. As experts note, solving these issues will determine how effective the new survival strategy of the Russian military-industrial complex will be.
