The Russian Ministry of Defence has developed and patented a frame – a part for a conical adapter that connects a spacecraft to a launch vehicle. The new development solves the problem of payload capacity: an adapter with such a frame can withstand up to 3.5 tons, according to Rospatent documents. Previously, composite materials were used for these purposes.
The frame is a metal ring in the shape of a truncated cone. On its outer side there are grooves into which carbon fiber is laid – this forms the mesh structure of the adapter, which distributes the load. On the inner side there are platforms with holes for attachment to other structural elements. Thanks to this solution, the load is distributed evenly, and the connection is reliable.
The frame strengthens the structure due to additional ribs, spiral elements of different thicknesses, and support platforms. This allows the adapter to withstand a weight of up to 3.5 tons. Previously, composite materials were used for such adapters; the new development is entirely metallic, which significantly simplifies production.
The frame is suitable for communication satellites and Earth remote sensing spacecraft. Detailed technical specifications are not disclosed in the patent.
