The second RITM-200 reactor plant for the Project 22220 nuclear icebreaker "Leningrad" has been fully manufactured and prepared for transfer to shipbuilders. Production was completed by the machine-building plant "ZiO-Podolsk", part of the Rosatom structure.
The new icebreaker will receive a pair of modern RITM-200 reactor plants, which will provide it with high power and the ability to operate in heavy Arctic ice conditions. The plant sent the first reactor for the "Leningrad" to the Baltic Shipyard two months earlier.
Project 22220 nuclear icebreakers are considered the largest and most powerful vessels of their class in the world. They are designed for year-round escort of ships along the Northern Sea Route and ensuring stable navigation in Arctic regions.
Four icebreakers of this series are already operating in the Russian fleet — "Arktika", "Sibir", "Ural", and "Yakutia". Construction of two more Project vessels — "Leningrad" and "Chukotka" — continues at the Baltic Shipyard. In addition, in November 2025, the next nuclear icebreaker of the series, named "Stalingrad", was laid down.
RITM-200 is one of the key technologies of the new generation of Russian nuclear icebreakers. The compact reactor plant is designed specifically for ice-class vessels and combines high power with smaller dimensions compared to previous ship reactors.
