"Center for Advanced Developments" has patented a climatic-amortizing support for body armor. The product is intended for use in the army, law enforcement agencies, and special forces. The problem that the development solves is the so-called behind-armor local contusion injury. Even if a bullet does not penetrate the body armor, the shock wave and deformation of the armor plate are transmitted to the body, which can lead to internal injuries - from hemorrhages to ruptures of internal organs.
The new design is based on a multi-walled perforated composite material with polygonal holes. These are filled with two-component elastic polyurethane foam. The wall thickness of the composite structure is 0.01–0.3 of the diameter of the inscribed circle, and the volume of pore filling with polyurethane can vary from 10% to 99%. This design works as a shock absorber: it dissipates and absorbs impact energy, reducing peak pressure on the body. This allows reducing the severity of a possible contusion injury while maintaining the integrity of the body armor.
In addition to amortization, according to the developers, the support provides ventilation in the under-vest space, which increases comfort during prolonged wear. In combination with lightweight composite materials, such as ceramics and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene, this allows maintaining a relatively low weight of the body armor.
