Project Borei strategic nuclear submarines will be able to perform combat missions for the next 30-40 years. This was announced by the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, Admiral Alexander Moiseev, noting that these submarines have become the basis of a new generation of naval strategic forces.
Project 955 missile carriers replaced Project 667BDRM "Dolphin" nuclear submarines, which for many years formed the basis of the underwater component of the nuclear triad. The "Borei" received modern control systems, stealth capabilities, and are armed with sea-launched ballistic missiles.
According to the Commander-in-Chief of the Navy, the new class of strategic submarines is designed for long-term operation and will maintain combat readiness for several decades.
The previous generation – Project 667BDRM – became one of the most famous in the history of the domestic submarine fleet. This family included the nuclear submarine "Novomoskovsk", which in August 1991 set a world record by launching 16 ballistic missiles in one salvo.
Borei strategic missile carriers belong to the fourth generation of nuclear submarines and are designed for combat duty with intercontinental ballistic missiles. The Russian fleet includes ships of projects 955 and the modernized 955A "Borei-A", which are gradually replacing older carriers.
