Fraudsters have started calling motorists, allegedly on behalf of gas station chains, offering fuel without a queue. According to Baza, drivers are promised to be pre-registered at gas stations, and at the same time, to be credited with additional liters of gasoline.
To arrange the "service," scammers ask for a code from an SMS, which was allegedly sent by the gas station chain. After that, the victim is persuaded to install a special application under the pretext of confirming the registration or receiving a bonus.
In reality, the program gives attackers remote access to the smartphone. Through it, they can see the screen, intercept data, and access banking applications.
One of the drivers was saved by an inconsistency: he told the fraudsters one gas station chain, but the message with the code came from another. The man suspected a deception and ended the conversation.
Real gas station employees do not require installing unknown applications or dictating codes from SMS. If the caller promises fuel out of turn and rushes with confirmation, it is better to end the conversation immediately.
