Scientists at Lobachevsky State University of Nizhny Novgorod have developed an electronic system that partially reproduces the principles of neuron interaction in biological neural networks.
Unlike conventional computing systems, the new development processes signals directly through the interaction of artificial neurons and changes in the connections between them. The system consists of two artificial neurons connected by a memristor – an element that acts as a synapse. Under certain conditions, the second neuron begins to adjust its rhythm of operation to the first, and synchronization occurs.
As explained by the research leader Ivan Kipelkin, such systems can be used in the future for processing signals from various sensors, pattern recognition, as well as in robotics and automatic control systems. A separate direction is related to biomedical technologies – the principles of synchronization of artificial neurons can be useful for analyzing the electrical activity of the nervous system, creating neuroprostheses, and neurorehabilitation systems.
Scientists have experimentally confirmed the possibility of using memristors as adaptive artificial synapses. The work was carried out within the framework of the "Priority-2030" program with the support of the Russian Science Foundation.
