ROSATOM Director General Alexey Likhachev called the cooperation between Russia and China in the field of peaceful atom deep, strategic, and exemplary, TASS reports. The main practical result is the simultaneous construction of two nuclear power plants on the shores of the Yellow Sea.
Two VVER-1200 units are being built at the Tianwan and Xudapu sites. According to Likhachev, startup operations at the first units of both stations will begin in the coming weeks, and at the second units – within the next year. After the commissioning of the seventh and eighth units, Tianwan will become the most powerful NPP in the world with a total generation of 9 GW, six of its eight reactors built using Russian technologies.
In addition to traditional energy, the parties agreed to cooperate in thermonuclear fusion, quantum technologies, and the supply of advanced nuclear fuel. Russia already accounts for up to 80% of the Chinese market for scarce radioisotopes, and this year will begin supplying fuel for VVER-1200 and fast neutron reactors.
