Electric Motors to Get Protection from Power Surges Thanks to New NSTU Development

The patented device is designed for use in three-phase networks

Scientists from Novosibirsk State Technical University have developed and patented a new AC voltage regulator capable of increasing the reliability of household appliances and industrial equipment. The device is designed to protect electric motors, machine tools, and production lines from voltage surges and sags.

The development is intended for systems where power supply instability can lead to equipment failure, costly repairs, and production shutdowns.

According to NSTU developers, the device is based on a simpler circuit design with a reduced number of semiconductor elements and reactive components. This allows for a more compact design, simplified control, and increased system reliability.

The development is based on a switching unit with a set of modules and a reactive element unit, including non-polar capacitors and chokes. These components help smooth out electric current fluctuations and regulate the voltage level supplied to the load.

Engineers also created a universal control system, whose algorithms can be applied not only in the new regulator but also in other power devices.

The technology is designed for use in three-phase networks, where it can compensate for voltage asymmetry and ensure more stable operation of powerful equipment.
